Take part

How to be heard

Find the body that votes on your issue, then pick how you want to take part: in person, by phone or online, or in writing.

Pick your issue, then how to take part

Each box is one body. The links at the bottom of each box take you straight to the steps for that way of taking part.

Get ready

These are our suggestions for any meeting, not rules.

  • Say your name and where you live first. Officials listen hardest to their own voters.
  • Make one clear ask. Name the item, case or bill number and say what you want them to do.
  • Write it out and time yourself out loud. One minute is about 130 words. Two minutes is about 260.
  • Tell them something only you can: what this does to your street, your school, your bill.
  • If others already made your point, say you agree with them and add what is new.
  • Send the same comment in writing, too. It stays in the record after the meeting ends.
  • Stay civil. Speak to the issue, not the person.
